From the West side of the island and a great few days exploring Zanzi Resort and Stone Town we moved back over to the East side of the island, to a place called Pongwe Beach.
In under an hour we had arrived at our hotel, Pongwe Beach Hotel, which is nestled directly on the beach in front of a turquoise ocean. We’d seen a couple of pics of this hotel leading up to our trip so we had a good idea of what it would be like but the white soft sand, turquoise water and lush tropical plantation made for such an idyllic and natural setting it really did surpass all our expectations.
In addition to this, the infinity pool is picturesquely situated on the left hand side of the hotel with a view directly over the ocean and the palm-fringed beach. The restaurant food is decent but has limited options in the evening for dinner so fussy eaters beware ;)
Water activities on offer include paddle boarding, snorkeling and line fishing although the timing of these trips has to be very specific as the tides are quite severe. However this does allow for interesting walks on the seabed watching the locals as they gather limpets, crabs and other food. Chatting with the local Zanzibar people and Tanzanians from other parts of the country was one of the highlights of our trip. Such super friendly people, always a smile on their face and eager to share any insights and knowledge that you might care for about the island and their country.
Of course you have other tours and trips of the island on offer too, including the usual spice tour and Jozani forest nature reserve, however if you’ve arrived in Zanzibar for some peace and relaxation in a slice of Paradise then we can’t think of many better than Pongwe Beach Hotel.
